The fine filter is inserted into the cap at the base. It is a type of filtration foam that will filter out sediment and larger particles collected in the flush pipe while still allowing the water to drain out of bottom plug. This prevents the sediment from clogging the adjustable drain and causing the water to become trapped in the flush pipe.

The outlet filter does a similar job; The filter replaces the fine stainless screen and prevents insects and debris entering the rainwater tank. Unfortunately it is a bit of a trade- off between filtration and maintaining flow. ie: a fine filter screen will filter out more material but will become blocked quickly, whereas a coarse filter (or none at all) will take longer to block, but not offer any filtration. The insect screen must be around 0.8mm to be effective for stopping insects.

The coarse filter effectively increases the surface area that is filtering the water and so provides and effective filter that does not block up so quickly.

The final addition is a replacement leaf screen. This new screen has stainless steel mesh that both looks better and increases the flow rate into the device with minimal splashing. It also has a better colour match to the last model.
